INFUSED will enable the discovery of new therapeutic strategies that could boost the self-healing capacity of the heart after injury.
To achieve this, we will identify the critical components in the heart regeneration "circuitry" observed in the zebrafish. Unlike humans, the zebrafish exhibits an impressive organ regeneration capability after injury. The identified regeneration drivers and their corresponding biological interaction networks will be computationally matched to chemical compounds with the purpose of enhancing or accelerating the heart regeneration process. Candidate drugs could include those currently applied to treat other diseases.
The long-term objective is to translate these findings into new treatments for patients who suffer heart attacks.
